Hanamichi Sakuragi, a terrible thug immature and unpopular, is determined to put an end to the disappointments of love when he entered Shohoku High School. There he met Haruko Akagi, a girl he falls in love with. Following his advice, and to please him, he decides to play basketball and join the high school club. However, in an altercation with the captain of the basketball team, Hanamichi is forced to challenge him in a duel during a face-to-face. Sakuragi eventually won and learned that the captain was none other than Haruko's big brother: Takenori Akagi. Despite some reluctance, the latter finally let him enter the basketball team, but unfortunately for him, the boy of whom is in love Haruko, Kaede Rukawa,
The two rivals will have to play in the same team. Sakuragi then began to really love basketball and, after many adventures, Rukawa, Akagi and Sakuragi then embarked on the conquest of the national title.
They are joined later by Mitsui Hisashi, MVP at college, and Riyota Miyagi, back at exceptional rapidity and dexterity, experiencing the same amorous sorrows as Sakuragi. Shohoku's 5 major is thus formed and accompanied by their coach Anzai and supported by their fans. They will have to beat all their opponents up to the national title
